    Kepler observations of A-F pre-main sequence stars in Upper Scorpius: Discovery of six new δ\delta~Scuti and one γ\gamma~Doradus stars

    We present light curves and periodograms for 27 stars in the young Upper Scorpius association (age=11±111 \pm 1\,Myr) obtained with the Kepler spacecraft. This association is only the second stellar grouping to host several pulsating pre-main sequence (PMS) stars which have been observed from space. From an analysis of the periodograms, we identify six δ\delta~Scuti variables and one γ\gamma~Doradus star. These are most likely PMS stars or else very close to the zero-age main sequence. Four of the δ\delta~Scuti variables were observed in short-cadence mode, which allows us to resolve the entire frequency spectrum. For these four stars, we are able to infer some qualitative information concerning their ages. For the remaining two δ\delta~Scuti stars, only long-cadence data are available, which means that some of the frequencies are likely to be aliases. One of the stars appears to be a rotational variable in a hierarchical triple system. This is a particularly important object, as it allows the possibility of an accurate mass determination when radial velocity observations become available.     An Examination of Personality as a Predictor of Guard Behavior in a Virtual Environment

    Military personnel need access to realistic training tools that can provide a safe environment in which to acquire skills that will generalize to real world tasks. A virtual environment (VE) is one such tool. The focus of the present study was to evaluate a VE as a training tool for military guards. The first goal was to examine the potential of VE technology to provide effective training for standing watch at a military checkpoint. The second goal was to study a set of personality traits that might predict performance. Participants completed the NEO Personality Inventory and were trained to perform the role of a military checkpoint guard within a CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment. Trainees interacted with virtual drivers and determined whether drivers exhibited suspicious behavior and met identification requirements for entry onto a fictional base. Results indicated that participants were able to use VE technology to (a) familiarize and immerse themselves in a military checkpoint task, (b) improve performance on training scenarios, and (c) transfer their knowledge from one session to a subsequent session. Examination of personality traits yielded significant results only for openness as a predictor of performance. Collectively, these findings suggest that VEs show potential for scenario-based training

    Analytic solution of a static scale-free network model

    We present a detailed analytical study of a paradigmatic scale-free network model, the Static Model. Analytical expressions for its main properties are derived by using the hidden variables formalism. We map the model into a canonic hidden variables one, and solve the latter. The good agreement between our predictions and extensive simulations of the original model suggests that the mapping is exact in the infinite network size limit. One of the most remarkable findings of this study is the presence of relevant disassortative correlations, which are induced by the physical condition of absence of self and multiple connections.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Photometric and spectroscopic variability of 53 Per

    A new investigation of the variability of the SPB-type star 53 Per is presented. The analysis of the BRITE photometry allowed us to determine eight independent frequencies and the combination one. Five of these frequencies and the combination one were not known before. In addition, we gathered more than 1800 new moderate and high-resolution spectra of 53 Per spread over approximately six months.     Background: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), are considered a growing global disease, with about ten million people being affected worldwide. Maintenance of intestinal barrier integrity is crucial for preventing IBD onset and exacerbations. Some recent patents regarding oily formulations containing probiotics (WO2010122107A1 and WO2010103374A9) and the use of probiotics for gastrointestinal complaints (US20110110905A1 and US9057112B2) exist, or are pending application. Objective: In this work, we studied the effect of a fixed combination of registered Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus acidophilus strains and herbal extracts in an in vitro inflammation experimental model. Methods: Caco-2 cell monolayer was exposed to INF-\u3b3+TNF-\u3b1 or to LPS; Trans Epithelial Electrical Resistance (TEER) and paracellular permeability were investigated. ZO-1 and occludin Tight Junctions (TJs) were also investigated by mean of immunofluorescence. Results: Pre-treatment with the fixed combination of probiotics and herbal extracts prevented the inflammation-induced TEER decrease, paracellular permeability increase and TJs translocation. Conclusions: In summary, the fixed combination of probiotics and herbal extracts investigated in this research was found to be an interesting candidate for targeting the re-establishment of intestinal barrier function in IBD conditions

    Na-O anticorrelation and HB. IX. Kinematics of the program clusters. A link between systemic rotation and HB morphology?

    We use accurate radial velocities for 1981 member stars in 20 Galactic globular clusters, collected within our large survey aimed at the analysis of the Na-O anti-correlation, to study the internal kinematics of the clusters. We performed the first systematic exploration of the possible connections between cluster kinematics and the multiple populations phenomenon in GCs. We did not find any significant correlation between Na abundance and either velocity dispersion or systemic rotation. We searched for systemic rotation in the eight clusters of our sample that lack such analysis from previous works in the literature (NGC2808, NGC5904, NGC6171, NGC6254, NGC6397, NGC6388, NGC6441, and NGC6838). These clusters are found to span a large range of rotational amplitudes, from ~0.0 km/s (NGC6397) to ~13.0 km/s (NGC6441). We found a significant correlation between the ratio of rotational velocity to central velocity dispersion (V_{rot}/sigma_0) and the Horizontal Branch Morphology parameter (B-R)/(B+R+V). V_{rot}/sigma_0 is found to correlate also with metallicity, possibly hinting to a significant role of dissipation in the process of formation of globular clusters. V_{rot} is found to correlate well with (B-R)/(B+R+V), M_V, sigma_0 and [Fe/H]. All these correlations strongly suggest that systemic rotation may be intimately linked with the processes that led to the formation of globular clusters and the stellar populations they host.Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics.     CAOS spectroscopy of Am stars Kepler targets

    The {\it Kepler} space mission and its {\it K2} extension provide photometric time series data with unprecedented accuracy. These data challenge our current understanding of the metallic-lined A stars (Am stars) for what concerns the onset of pulsations in their atmospheres. It turns out that the predictions of current diffusion models do not agree with observations. To understand this discrepancy, it is of crucial importance to obtain ground-based spectroscopic observations of Am stars in the {\it Kepler} and {\it K2} fields in order to determine the best estimates of the stellar parameters. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of high-resolution spectroscopic data for seven stars previously classified as Am stars. We determine the effective temperatures, surface gravities, projected rotational velocities, microturbulent velocities and chemical abundances of these stars using spectral synthesis. These spectra were obtained with {\it CAOS}, a new instrument recently installed at the observing station of the Catania Astrophysical Observatory on Mt. Etna. Three stars have already been observed during quarters Q0-Q17, namely: HD\,180347, HD\,181206, and HD\,185658, while HD\,43509 was already observed during {\it K2} C0 campaign. We confirm that HD\,43509 and HD\,180347 are Am stars, while HD 52403, HD\,50766, HD\,58246, HD\,181206 and HD\,185658 are marginal Am stars. By means of non-LTE analysis, we derived oxygen abundances from O{\sc I}λ\lambda7771--5{\AA} triplet and we also discussed the results obtained with both non-LTE and LTE approaches.Comment: accepted in MNRAS main journal 13 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1404.095

    Random walks on complex trees

    We study the properties of random walks on complex trees. We observe that the absence of loops is reflected in physical observables showing large differences with respect to their looped counterparts. First, both the vertex discovery rate and the mean topological displacement from the origin present a considerable slowing down in the tree case. Second, the mean first passage time (MFPT) displays a logarithmic degree dependence, in contrast to the inverse degree shape exhibited in looped networks. This deviation can be ascribed to the dominance of source-target topological distance in trees. To show this, we study the distance dependence of a symmetrized MFPT and derive its logarithmic profile, obtaining good agreement with simulation results. These unique properties shed light on the recently reported anomalies observed in diffusive dynamical systems on trees
